Our Mission

Children across Australia are being locked in cells alone for hours, days, and sometimes weeks at a time. Solitary confinement is used in youth detention centres in every state and territory, despite overwhelming evidence that it causes serious and lasting harm. The practice has been condemned by the United Nations and is widely recognised as a violation of human rights, especially when used against children as young as ten.

No Child In Solitary is a national campaign calling on the federal government to take action. While day-to-day management of youth justice sits with the states, the failure to protect children from solitary confinement is a national moral crisis. Federal leaders have the power to set national standards, ensure Australia complies with international obligations, and use funding, oversight, and coordination to drive urgent reform.

We work to expose the scale and harm of solitary confinement, share the stories of those affected, and equip federal policymakers with the evidence and public support needed to lead change. The issue will not be solved in isolation. It requires national vision, national responsibility, and national leadership. Children in every part of this country deserve better. The federal government must act to ensure no child in Australia is ever locked in solitary confinement again.
